Sunday 20th January - bike **** – Felixstowe to Trimley Marshes – sunny
and cold.
Woke to a cold and frosty morning but sunny and light winds so it was too
good an opportunity not to get out again in the fresh air:) With flask
made, cake packed and GPS running we wrapped up well and set off on our
bikes at 12.15 for the Suffolk Wildlife hides at Trimley Marshes. Heading
over the Felixstowe dock spur road we took a slightly different path to
Cordy’s Lane, then joined the long track to the hides which has been
recently patched with hard core making it a bit soft in places! We stopped
at the first hide on the hill before reaching the Orwell and were treated
to hundreds of noisy geese circling overhead looking for a landing spot,
their options were reduced as all the floods(lakes) were frozen over! We
then tried the first hide on the reserve proper and met a couple of
friendly birdwatchers but all the action was at the far end of the New
Fleet due to the frozen water! Mag continued to the Winter Flood hide on
the bottom track while I biked along the sea wall to fantastic views of the
docks and River Orwell with loads of birds feeding in the large area of
mud. We were not in the hide long as there was nothing to see so we carried
on to Trimley lagoon, sitting on the point for our warming cuppa and cake
and were lucky to see Avocets flying low overhead:) Then around dead tree
lagoon with the path good to bike on as not too muddy. Up and over the
cliffs at Levington bay and down to Loompit lake which was heaving with
birds as only the margins were frozen. The clump of tree covered in White
Cormorant poo framed the scene! We carried on to the end of the lake to
take in the great view and soon spotted several more Avocets feeding in the
shallow water. There were several people enjoying a fantastic winters day,
walkers with and without dogs, cyclists, birdwatchers and even people on
horse back and kids on the rope swing! Retracing our tracks, we turned up
beside Loompit to our favourite tree lined path and home. Another top day
out seeing the best that Suffolk has to offer! We were out 2 hours 40
minutes covering nearly 12 miles.
